Customize Your Study Program

We are working on improving this system to help you decide which products may be the most useful for you, based on your goals and intentions.  If you have questions this doesn't answer (or ideas to improve this page) please contact us with your questions and we'll help you customize your study program.

We usually suggest everyone start with the Vilppu Drawing Manual because it addresses the fundamentals of drawing.   This is the book that is listed as a "must read" by many of the big animation studios.  You can work with this alone, or you can get the accompanying DVD's, to get the benefit of Glenn's lecture directly in your own home!

If you are wanting to Quick Sketch, we suggest you start this after getting through at least Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 in the Vilppu Drawing Manual.  We have a small book of Glenn's Quick Sketches, as well as a DVD of Glenn lecturing about the Quick Sketch.

We suggest animators, painters, cartoonists, (well... everyone really) work with the Vilppu Sketching on Location Manual because of it's emphasis on composition and layout.  This book can be used simultaneously to the Vilppu Drawing Manual since it is different subject matter.

Once you have a firm grasp of the fundamentals, we suggest you move on to the Drawing Drapery materials.

From there, to develop more in depth knowledge of the human figure, we suggest the Drawing Anatomy Lecture Series DVD's.  There is a specific set of products to help you with drawing hands and feet, as well as one on drawing heads

With an understanding of much of this subject matter, you may want to get the reference cards to keep handy with you while you're out sketching.

Because not everyone has access to models on a daily basis, and to help you practice your drawing the human figure, we have developed several CD's with photos of models posing.

As you can now see, all of the materials work together, and it is up to you to decide how far to get into it.  Some hobbyists may only want to go through the Vilppu Drawing Manual, while dedicated artists may want to use all of the materials.  If you are thinking about ordering a lot of products, you may want to check out our packages and internet specials to see the amazing discounts we can offer you for these.

To give you an idea of how much time to put into each section, the students in Glenn's classes spend about 3-4 hours drawing based on the information in one lecture, before moving on to the next.  But feel free to work with one chapter for as long as it takes you to feel comfortable with the concept.  You can always come back to rework that chapter again later.  In fact, some students come back to take the fundamentals course over and over for many years at a time.
