Vilppu Drawing Manual

The Vilppu Drawing Manual is a series of 12 lessons and is 176 pages. The first chapter deals with the getting the gesture or action of the figure. The chapters progress, each one building on the previous one.  The use of spherical forms, boxes and cylinders are thoroughly demonstrated and explained.  A strong emphasis on basic procedures, fundamentals of anatomy, 2D and 3D observations.  The final three chapters are devoted to the use of tone.  Each chapter is thoroughly illustrated in a true "how to manner".  This is not a coffee table book, it is a drawing manual.  For the DVDs of the actual lectures of each chapter, click here: Figure Lectures.

"Thank you Glenn for writing the ultimate drawing manual that can be used by myself as well as my students.  The more one learns about drawing, the more they will see in each page.  This book will grow with you." -Sheldon Borenstein, Professional Animator, Lifelong Student, Owner and Operator Of the Sheldon's Art Academy, Teacher at San Jose State University

Vilppu Sketching on Location Manual

Italy Tour Participants Get Your Supplies Here!

The Sketching on Location Manual is a direct development of daily lessons for students and artists traveling with me on my annual sketching tours of Europe. There are 12 chapters, each of which as in the Drawing Manual, build on the previous lesson. Subjects are both landscape and figures, dealing with both fundamental procedures, composition, technique and a final chapter on the use of photographs. To go find out more about these tours, click here, European Sketching Tour with Glenn.

Vilppu Quick Sketch

The sketch is the capturing of the essentials of a subject without details.  The phrase "quick sketch" has come to be synonymous with a drawing done quickly to capture the action or gesture.  However, what are essentials to one artist may not be to another, and thus the meaning of the sketch is in the intention of the artist.  The famous 18th century English artist Hogarth made a comment about Michelangelo that he never sketched haphazardly, for every line had a meaning.  While drawing quickly, it is necessary to decide what is most important about your subject.  As you develop skills, the decision making process is often intuitive.  The lines you put down are directly linked to your thoughts and feelings about the subject of your attention.

The procedure for doing most of the sketches is the same as outlined in the Vilppu Drawing Manual, the Vilppu Sketching on Location Manual and the Quick Sketch Lecture on DVD.  This is not a how to book, it is a sketchbook.

Head Drawing and Anatomy Volume One

This book parallels very closely the head drawing classes that I teach, and a majority of the illustrations were created as lecture demonstrations in class.  Consequently, this is in reality a head drawing and anatomy manual to be used by students in my classes as a textbook.  The use of this manual should be of equal value to those working on their own who are unable to attend my classes in person.  The material is the same as in my classes with the advantage of portability and no time constraints.

I have consistently found myself drawn to the fundamentals in teaching drawing.  A solid grounding in the basics, approached as tools of expression, rather than rules that must be followed, free the artist allowing him or her to follow their individual direction.

The basis of my approach is founded on very simple grounds.  First, you must know how to describe form.  Second, you must understand the form you are drawing.  These first two give you the freedom of expression.

This is one of four smaller books on drawing by Vilppu showing the anatomy of the head in detail. In conjunction with the Vilppu Head Drawing DVD's becomes a complete course on how to draw the head.  Check out the related head drawing products here!

Figure Drawing Demonstrations Step By Step

In this book, I address the basic difficulty that many students have in class as well as in studying from reproductions of drawings.  In class, I demonstrate by doing drawings showing each step in the process.  Still, I find that even as the student watches me doing the drawing, it is difficult to remember all of the steps that went before the finished drawing.  The use of a tablet computer now allows me to save and show each of the steps, so that the student can go back to the beginning as many times as needed.  Use this book as a supplement to my Vilppu Drawing Manual and the DVDs of classroom lectures and demonstrations.

The drawings vary from simple quick sketches with only a couple of steps to complicated finished drawings. All of the drawings were done in class as demonstrations on a Toshiba Portege tablet computer.

Drawing Drapery The Clothed Figure The Seven Basic Folds

As art students, we all spent most of our time drawing the nude figure. As  professional artists, we rarely draw the nude figure.  In drawing the draped figure, the natural tendency is to copy the pattern of the folds that we see.  My focus in this book is to use the drapery as a means to describe the underlying form.  Of course, in describing the form, the action of the form is a critical element so the drapery becomes a strong component of communicating the action.  The folds created by the drapery fall into predicable patterns determined by the kind of drapery, the form that it goes over, the action of the form and, in the case of clothes, the cut and type.

The predicable patterns are classified into seven basic folds, and combinations of these folds.  Understanding these folds, and what causes them, allows the artist to draw the clothed figure from imagination.  In drawing from the model, the understanding of the basic folds and their causes, gives you the ability to select the folds that best communicate the action and describe the form.

This is one of four smaller books an drawing by Vilppu explaining and showing examples of the seven basic folds.  In conjunction with the other Vilppu Drawing Drapery materials, this becomes a complete course on how to draw drapery.

Drawing Hands and Feet

Hands are one of the strongest elements of expression in humans, and as such, the gesture of the hands is a vital part of the drawing.  Hands and feet are particularly difficult because of the complexity of the forms to start with, and the variety of shapes, combinations and gestures they take.  Hands and feet are subjects that seem to continually give artists a great deal of difficulty.  There are many good books on anatomy, but few actually give much instruction on how to draw.  Hopefully this small book will fill some of the gaps, if not in anatomy, in drawing.  In this volume, I am presenting procedures and methods of drawing hands and feet that go back to the 15th century.

This is one of four smaller books an drawing by Vilppu showing the details of drawing hands and feet.   In conjunction with the Vilppu DVD on the Anatomy of the Hand and Anatomy of the Feet, and the reference cards for each, it becomes a complete course on how to draw hands and feet.  View the related Hands & Feet drawing products here.
